i must have been completely tuned out, but while reading reviews for "Go Away White" I've been seeing news about how the group completely crashed and burned (again) while recording it. Can anybody direct me to any detailed articles about what's going on with them?

Bauhaus-Go Away White

Did anyone else get this today?

BAUHAUS - 'GO AWAY WHITE'

"I come with this darkness and go away white."

Bauhaus slid fully formed from punk rock's womb in late 1978. Over the
course of four hot years, they unintentionally birthed a genre (Goth),
moved on, moved forward, and surged mercurial through the post-punk music
scene, tearing into tense, stark, dub bass-driven new-wave, T-Rex-esque
glam, and swirling, clattering, orchestral atmospherics, whilst churning
it all into a grand velvet, Rimbaudian hallucination. It was a wild,
inspired, enthralling sound. And it still is. Now there is a new record.

'Go Away White' was recorded in 18 days at Zircon Skye in Ojai, with
singer Peter Murphy, bassist David J, guitarist Daniel Ash, and drummer
Kevin Haskins playing together as a band in one room, taking first takes
as final cuts. So, a new record but apparently a final one, the band
having decided to release it as a posthumous swan song.

'Go Away White' is everything you would hope Bauhaus would deliver as
their final statement. Fronted by a cover photo of Bethesda, the angel of
the healing waters in New York's Central Park, the music inside is pure
cathartic renovation, a psychedelic glimpse into an enchanted moment.
Aided in part by guitarist Daniel Ash's inspired use of Jimi Hendrix's own
personal Vox wah wah pedal, gifted to him by Peter Murphy at the start of
the sessions, it is pop as much as it is experimental.

The 10 songs on 'Go Away White' channel the kind of magic timelessness you
could imagine on a mighty bill with Joy Division, Bowie, Devo, the
Creatures, Antony, My Bloody Valentine, and Kraftwerk--with Oscar Wilde
playing master of ceremonies.

As the NME once said, "Bauhaus are to Goth, what Radiohead are to Prog."
It's all building blocks. Give 'Go Away White' an honest minute and you'll
realize that The Klaxons, The Killers, The Rapture and Foals all got their
beats from Bauhaus, and how--without them--there would be no Nine Inch
Nails or Jane's Addiction or Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, AFI, TV on the
Radio, Interpol, Hot Hot Heat or LCD Sound System.

The accomplishments of the band are too many to list here but to touch
lightly, there are the four studio albums: 'In the Flat Field' (1980),
'Mask' (1981), 'The Sky's Gone Out' (1982), and 'Burning from the Inside'
(1983). There is the riveting appearance with David Bowie in the
movie,'The Hunger'. There are the classic Peel sessions and the
hits--seismic rumbles such as 'She's in Parties', 'Kick in the
Eye','Stigmata Martyr', and the great, epic, pillar of ether and brooding,
psychedelia, that is 'Bela Lugosi's Dead.'

So, an end but an end with one final sonorous statement. Behold 'Go Away
White'.

Watch as night comes, as day breaks and the light . . . pours . . . in.

--Adam Gnade

Released on March 4th, 2008 worldwide. Distributed by Red Eye in North
America, Cooking Vinyl for the rest of the world. It will also be
available as digital download on iTunes (only in North America).

Kind of a cool/Bowie-sounding number, but I sure hope that doesn't represent the audio quality of the album!

David J at MacWorld this Friday

Hey all~

So I spent the day at MacWorld yesterday and noticed that in Moscone South's exhibit hall is a music/media corner where they had a photographer I wasn't familiar with, but David J is slated to play several bits on Friday. It is actually Best Buy's booth and here's their blurb for it:

Bring iLife to Life at Best Buy -- your one-stop destination for your Mac and peripheral needs. Visit the onsite store to pick up new Macs and accessories while checking out world-famous photographer Dean Karr, Grammy winning Neal H.Pogue, audio-visual performers “StarCulture” and music legend David J of Bauhaus.

Could be worth checking out if you're in the neighborhood!

Hello. I really didn`t know much about the band until I heard Peter Murphy sing "Bela Lugosi`s Dead" in the opening credits for "The Hunger". That was in the mid/late 80`s. It felt like I was in a trance and couldn`t take my eyes off PM. The tune haunted me for many days. Hoping to learn more about the band`s work and members from this tribe. Currently I only have the double CD anthology series as I`m a starving student. Bauhaus was 'goth' before there was any 'goth'. What is the consensus on the three "must have" Bauhaus albums? I look forward to being a member here.

Thanks!

David J re-release notes on Glass Records...

I thought the imagery and wording on this was absolutely wonderful...

*******************************************************************************************************************************************

Glass Records was a little island of salvation. The haunted galleon, 'Bauhaus', wrecked in a storm of volatility, I found myself, a survivor, washed up on the shore with a kit-bag full of songs and a battered acoustic guitar.

The label was presided over by one, Dave "Elvis" Barker, a man with true A&R ears and a deep passion for yer rock n' roll music, in the broadest sense of that term.

All the A-sides and most of the 'B's' that appeared on Glass Records are included in this re-issue of the compilation 'On Glass' which was first released in 1986. Also included are several tracks which did not appear on the original.

'Crocodile Tears And The Velvet Cosh', the original version not included on the first edition of 'On Glass'. Here, the track is placed back to back with a later stripped down acoustic reading which features alternative lyrics, more self recrimination than pointed accusation. I have been re-working this ditty for over twenty years and it is still evolving.

'Fear Is A Man's Best Friend' was included as part of a very rare limited edition Glass Records sampler album. I had label mate, Sonic Boom from Spacemen 3 with me in the studio at the time, offering encouragement and "inspiration." For the curious:That sound was achieved by striking an open tuned guitar with a soft beater in conjunction with the application of a cartridge shell as a slide.

'War Game' was a dub version of "Shadow Of Fear" which brings out my little brother Kevin's immaculate punchy drumming on the old electronic Simmons kit n' caboodle. Duck and cover!

'Man Of The World' was recorded at the legendary tobacco stained Beck studio in between finishing my first solo album, 'Etiquette Of Violence' and starting work on the 'Crocodile Tears' album. It was pretty spontaneous, I had always loved that song and it's sense of world-weary resignation, I worked it out in the studio at the end of the night. We were about to pack up and go when I asked the engineer to roll the tape and record. I gave myself one take. You can hear my chair squeaking towards the end!

At the time of writing, Bauhaus has been raised and re launched with new sails, whereas the little island that was Glass Records remains sunk but not without a trace. This collection is testament to that. A souvenir from another time, fond memories and sounds recalled, on 'Glass'.

Live at the Fillmore CD?

Hey all~

I hadn't heard anything about this on the list so I thought I'd start a new thread.

I was walking out of Streetlight in San Jose today and they had Bauhaus listed as a new CD release, which I hadn't heard anything about. I asked one of the clerks and she said it was a limited edition double CD called "Live at the Fillmore" and the official release date was yesterday!

Anyone have any news about this album? I'm assuming it would be from a recent concert, but I've been unable to find mention of it anywhere, even on their official site!

Thanks,

recently i discovered my entire vinyl collection had been ruined by an unforseen heating element. a very difficult day it was. of course my biggest concern is re-acquiring the special things never to my knowledge released in digital format. if any of you kind folk know of any download sites where i can find the likes of bands like joined at the head, cyberactiv, or very special to my heart.. ministry's cover of smothered hope. please share.
thanks much for your thought on this matter.

Is Peter O.K.?

I saw bauhaus in Montreal last week and twice in L.A. two weeks before that. During their original incarnation I hitched up and down the British Isles (and once to france) to see them thirty times, on the ressurection tour I saw them twice and as I'm writing this I'm watching Gotham. So therefore I feel that I can ask - is Peter O.K. - I see that as recently as '98 Peter was lively, he jumped, he danced, he shimmied and he shook.
Now he's not the demon that he was between 79 & 83, but then I'm not the slam-dancing, stage diving, pink & blue haired goth rocker that I was all those years ago. But on this tour he just does not seem to be as into it as we (the audience) are. Where is the posessed man who used control the stage and the crowd with his voice, his presence and his enthusiastic dancing????

I was recently watching my DVD of "Gotham" and was curious about the montage of old, mostly black & white, live shots that were shown during "All we ever wanted...". Are they from a released video or are they generally available er what???

So, thanks to Indie- they're an AWESOME radio sation and have brought LA radio to a whole new level as far as I'm concerned. I saw Bauhaus Halloween weekend at the Wiltern, and now I'm totally looking forward to seeing them in the O.C.

Lousy seats bought at presale?

Hi,

Am wondering if this happened in other cities.

A number of us used the password to buy tickets during the presale period last week. Then others bought tickets when they went on sale to the general public on Saturday 9/17, and got much better seats! I just replaced my own presale tickets from with ones bought today (the FOURTH day of public sales), because I got better seats today.

Yep, I'm stuck with two tickets I bought last week, but hope to sell them to someone else when the show sells out. Unfortunately, I had to pay $22 in ticketbastard fees to get these rotten presale tickets, while the ones I picked up today from the box office had no fees attached to them.

Similar experiences in other cities, anyone?

I had read somewhere that there was another recording of Double Dare set to go on In The Flat Field, but that the BBC version was thought stronger and that was the one that ended up on the album.

Has anybody, anywhere ever heard the original? Does that recording exist in somebody's bootleg collection?

1998 Set Lists

Since I posted the two (so far) San Francisco set lists, I thought I'd put up the set lists from the Resurrection tour, along with some notes I put down back then.

Monday 8/17/98 - The Warfield, San Francisco

Double Dare (Peter on video monitor)
In the Flat Field ("assist me to walk away in sin" changed to "assist me to
walk away from sin" : "In my yearn for some cerebral fix Transfer me to that solid plain" changed to "In my yearn for some spiritual fix Transfer me to that higher plain")
A God in an Alcove
In Fear of Fear (Danny on saxophone)
Hollow Hills
Terror Couple Kill Colonel ("In his West German home" changed to "In his
presidential home")
Silent Hedges
The Passion of Lovers
Severance (Dead Can Dance cover)
Boys (Peter changed clothes during the instrumental intro, redrew his
eyebrows while looking in the mirror, then handed his eyebrow pencil to
someone in the crowd - "Just like Nancy" changed to "Just like David")
The Sanity Assassin
She's in Parties ("She's acting her reaction" changed to "We're acting our
reactions" - Peter sang "Riders on the Storm" and "We're jammin', we're jammin', we're jammin' in the name of the Lord" several times towards the end of the song)
Kick in the Eye (Danny stayed at his microphone long enough after this song to start the crowd chanting "We want more, we want more!")
-first encore-
Telegram Sam
Ziggy Stardust (nice effect of Ziggy lightning bolt superimposed over
Bauhaus face projected over stage - the bolt slowly faded after the song,
but the face remained)
-second encore-
Burning From the Inside
-third encore-
Bela Lugosi's Dead

Tuesday 8/18/98

Double Dare
In the Flat Field
A God in an Alcove (after song, Peter said "We are no longer artists. We are rock gods.")
In Fear of Fear
Hollow Hills
Terror Couple Kill Colonel
Silent Hedges
Severance
Boys (Peter changed his clothes and used the mirror again, but no eyebrow
pencil tonight - sang "Just like Nancy")
The Sanity Assassin
She's in Parties ("We're acting our reactions", "Riders on the Storm", "We're Jammin'" like previous night)
The Passion of Lovers
Dark Entries
-first encore-
Telegram Sam
Ziggy Stardust
-second encore-
All We Ever Wanted Was Everything (before this song, Peter said "This is a
lyric Danny wrote. It's very beautiful." - Peter played lead guitar)
Spirit (Kevin came downstage to play keyboard and sing "We love our
audience" with the others - he got a great burst of applause, waved to the
crowd, and had a very bashful-looking grin)
-third encore-
Bela Lugosi's Dead (as Kevin was leaving the stage, he walked to the edge
and tossed his drumsticks into the crowd - Danny was lying on his back stage left, Kevin offered him a hand up then walked off... Danny got up, bounced around a bit, waved, and bounded offstage)

This morning I fly from Houston to L.A. for my 33rd & 34th Bauhaus shows. I can honestly say that I'm almost as excited today as I was all those years ago when I hitched around England to see them. The set-lists look great and apparently they are on top of their form, judging from most of the audience comments.
Tonight I will indeed be "near the atmosphere".

Well everybody, we received confirmation from the band and management earlier this week and Dark Sparkle will be hosting the official Bauhaus afterparty on Wednesday October 26th! Details are shrouded in as much mystery as the band themselves, but if you remember David J. gracing us with his DJ skills in the past, you never know. Hell, even we don't know at this point, but one thing's guaranteed...Miz Margo and Sage are going to rock it and we want you to be there! To sweeten the pot we invite you to bring in your Bauhaus ticket stub from either the 25th OR 26th and get in for our old school price of $3 all night. If you didn't make it to the show or forget your ticket, it's our usual low price of $5 all night (hey we're not trying to get rich off you over here).
Hope to see you all out!

I'm quite curious about Bauhaus' performance at Coachella and am hoping to see them in SF after Burning Man. If those shows sell out too fast, I do have a Dead Can Dance ticket to barter! :)

So does anyone have a setlist or just an impression as to how they were? Other than photos of Peter upside down for "Bela..." I've not heard a peep about their set.

Hasta,

After taking a hiatus away from Bauhaus and Goth in general for awhile, I've found that I'm drawn back into the fold. There's just something about those dark entries I love. They're soothing. But! I mean how many time can you hear Bella, or She's Lost Control, or Just One Kiss, or The Hollow Man? Do you guys know of any new bands, other than Interpol, that bring back the spirit of Goth?

Also, where's the pre-party for the Seattle show!?

Bauhaus back..New album and Tour

"I hear they are playing 3 dates in L.A. near Halloween.;)"

Former frontman Peter Murphy's UK tour ends tonight at Manchester Academy.

He's promoting his latest solo release, Unshattered, and is also currently in the process of getting the Bauhaus line-up back together to record new material for the first time since 1983.

Peter told 6 Music how it's going:

"I've actually been working on reforming the band for the last year. It's come to the point now what we are going to tour here in the winter and do a world tour and an album."

Peter Murphy Cuts It Up (a new Rolling Stone article)

Peter Murphy Cuts It Up
Dark crooner readies solo tour, Bauhaus reunion
<http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/_/id/7249647/petermurphy?rssfeed=musicnews>
Peter Murphy, the gaunt frontman of Eighties goth-rock pioneers Bauhaus, is readying an international tour in support of his eighth solo album, Unshattered. The jaunt kicks off just days after a Bauhaus reunion concert on April 30th at the Coachella music festival in California.

"It came up as a sort of radical offer," Murphy says of the reunion gig. "So I thought, 'Why not?'" This will be the second reunion stint for Murphy, guitarist Daniel Ash, bassist David J and drummer Kevin Haskins, who embarked on a full-fledged Bauhaus international tour in 1998. But Murphy is skeptical of new material coming of this one-off show. "We're not in touch a lot, really," he admits, "but we'll always be friends. We were childhood friends, you know."

With evocative singles such as "Bela Lugosi's Dead" and "She's in Parties," Bauhaus lasted a mere four years, but became the stuff of cult legend. After their 1983 breakup, the members (minus Murphy) went on to form pop outfit Love and Rockets, scoring a 1989 hit with "So Alive." Murphy, however, spun his dark vocals into a solo career that is now entering its third decade and includes the 1990 modern rock chart-topper "Cuts You Up" and the 1992 hit "The Sweetest Drop."

"Mine hasn't been a designer career," he says. "First off, Bauhaus doesn't fit in anywhere -- and I think of myself as a wanderer, or maybe a novelist. I go away and do my work in my own downtime and space." From his childhood, Murphy imagined himself a singer, learning hymns at Catholic school and Irish rebel songs from his father. But, surprisingly, his first obsession (at five years old) was Doris Day. "I loved her!" he gushes. "She was this mythical, perfect, wonderful lady who lived in America. I sang along to her record all the time."

It was the glam rock of T. Rex and David Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust" persona that eventually paved the way to Bauhaus' look, inspiring Murphy's first fashion-victim haircuts as a pre-teen. But by the early Eighties, when magazines were labeling the band's sound "goth," Murphy insists he had already moved on. "'Goth' seemed like a media event," he says, "just early attempts to take the most obvious elements of what we were doing and run with that. I don't really understand it. I'm almost more like a -- I dread to say it -- a religious seeker, an existentialist. There are so many bands now that are casualties of a designer attitude, and it just makes them safe. You have to somehow leave all that and go out to the desert in order to be open and naive and creative."

In recording Unshattered, Murphy worked quickly, recording all over the map, in cities as diverse as Los Angeles, Phoenix, London and Istanbul, where he's lived for thirteen years with his Turkish wife. "It's a travelogue in that way." Murphy's many stops picked up guests such as drummer Stephen Perkins (Jane's Addiction), guitarist Peter DiStefano (Porno for Pyros) and his Bauhaus mate Haskins, who also co-wrote the track "Blinded Like Saul."

The record is lighter than Murphy's typically moody material -- something Murphy attributes to Gardner Cole, who, oddly enough, produced Eighties hits by Madonna, Tina Turner and Chaka Khan. "He wouldn't get into the layers that I would have automatically added," Murphy explains. "He spent three weeks with the recordings, added live drummers and a couple of guitars and made the vocals really loud. He said he really wanted to let my voice show."

In an approach that Murphy has held to since his Bauhaus days, Unshattered was written, recorded and mixed in just eight weeks. "I've always loved spontaneity, writing from an improvisational approach -- especially since I'm untrained," he says. "A lot of the Bauhaus albums were recorded with a brilliant spirit, and we'd give ourselves two weeks to do everything."

Looking forward to performing the new songs on tour (in front of a Dada-esque backdrop made from "found objects"), Murphy admits that there's a diva within the goth. "Just to be able to sing live is something else. And lots of people will be looking at me, and I like that," he says with a laugh. "No, I really like that! For God's sake, I should have been playing in stadiums by now!"

He'll be drawing upon material from throughout his solo career, while steering clear of his beginnings. "I've never played Bauhaus songs, because there's a distinction: that's the band," he says. But the statement comes with a proviso. "Of course, there's an audience there. And, well, within the next several years I might just do a Bauhaus cover tour -- make it a real event."

As for Coachella, what Murphy is perhaps looking forward to most is seeing earnest Brit pop band Coldplay perform. "I just love that first album!" he says, confessing a bit of a crush on frontman Chris Martin. "He's so good-looking, isn't he? But, apparently, he hides himself onstage behind a piano. I'll hold his hand when I see him and give him some tips. Like, 'I know it's hard, but if you get even twenty percent of what I do down, you'll be fine.'"

Peter Murphy U.S. tour dates:

I'm curious: Why is there always such a poor turn out for/bad attitude about his solo shows? It might be nowhere *near* a Bauhaus performance, but it's still Peter fucking Murphy.

" Yes . . . kind of. More of a tribute to a span of music and artistry that started with Bauhaus. When lipstick wore thin, the stage lights dimmed and punk just wasn't the same anymore there was just nothing left to say but that it all had to be started over. Along with other artists like Joy Division, The Cure, Siouxsie and the Creatures a whole new generation of loathers and idealists was born from the rubble . . . and gave birth to the post-punk era."

Did anyone happen to catch Peter Murphy on Jonesy's Jukebox last Friday? He's such a nice guy. He did an acoustic version of Bowie's "Sapce Oddity" (which he had some trouble with because he had just learned to play it on guitar. It was still good!). Later, Steve Jones & Peter did a Roxy music cover which was fucking great! Overall it was a damn good show.

http://www.howardhallis.com/mash/hauntedbela.mp3

A little warning: It's a big file (about 9 MB for the whole song). If someone makes me take it offline I'll have to do it, so listen while you can!

I gave David J a copy of this at The Standard in downtown Los Angeles last Wednesday and he played it during his DJ set (he DJs there every Wed. from 6:30pm til 9:30pm by the way!). After he heard it, he gave me a hug and said "Well done Howard!"

I met Peter on the Deep tour and spent 2.5 hrs talking with man one on one and swimming with him in Mesa Az.
It was only me and him...
Later I came back and his entourage was there and I opened the gate to walk towards him and his bodyguard started to approach me and tell me I couldnt be there..And Peter waived him off and said all was good.
Peter asked if I was going to the show and I said I was broke so he gave me two free tickets.
yea ..He is a great guy.

I have been doing google searches for bauhaus tabs and it seems like every site essentially has the exact same tabs catalogued in different ways and certain songs just can't be found.
Does anyone know a reliable source for tabs?
